LANDSCAPE HOUSES


Buildings must be built on flat ground. This is almost always correct except where the ground is the edge of a hill or a beautifully designed undulating slope that is the background of architecture. Then, the landscape comes after the architecture is designed. Is the landscape a remnant of the building on the property? Or is the architecture above the ground a pinnacle/celebration of the landscape? This house looks like both, and neither. Is the building an extension of the mound? Or is the mound an extension of the building? They have almost the same volume and keep their own characters, but don’t insist which is the major element. They are continuous without any joint between them. The slope of the landscape, the exterior staircase, the skylights, the retaining walls, the stone paving, and the ground are treated as equal parts of the building, just like the walls, ceiling, floors, doors, windows, and roof......
