Mirror Symmetry House


This house sits on a mountain that was one of the sanctuaries for the Hudson River School landscape painters. Located on a west-facing slope, the house allows visitors to experience the beauty of the landscape that synchronizes with the sunset and sunrise. Here, you can be immersed in the landscape rather than creating an image by combining the broken views from each window.

 

There are no main or rear façades instead, the building consists of two tubes combined into an L shape. At sunset, the low sun approaches the top of a distant mountain, grazes this western slope, and passes through the horizontal tube. Light and air flow through the tube. The other tube stands vertically and gently guides the light from the skylight into the space at the same time creating an upward air current. The living area is at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical tubes, offering a 180-degree view into the heart of the forest. The dining area is located at the western end of the horizontal tube.

 

These simple ideas take form in L-shaped facades arranged back-to-back in a mirror-symmetry fashion. Small windows in the bathroom and kitchen at the center of the house are the only break in this symmetry. All the rooms: the kitchen, living room, and bathroom, constitute a continuous loop. As you walk through them, different views create a continuous impression of the land. The second floor in the vertical tube houses a bedroom with a two-story ceiling height. Above that is a rooftop deck offering views of the distant mountains.
 
 
 

鏡面対称の家

この建物をニューヨーク州北部のハドソン川派の風景画家たちの聖地の一つであった山の上に設計した。西向きの斜面にあるこの家は、訪れる人々に日の出と日の入りと同調する風景の美しさを体験させてくれる。ここでは、各窓から見える断片的な景色を組み合わせてイメージを作るのではなく、風景の中に浸ることができる。

 

建物に正面や裏側の概念はなく、建物はL字型に組み合わされた2つのチューブで構成されている。古典建築でのデザイン手法である左右の対称ではなく、建物の周りを歩くころで、その対称性が会得できる。日没時には、低い太陽が遠くの山の頂上に近づき、この西側の斜面をかすめて水平のチューブを通過する。光と空気がチューブを通り抜ける。垂直に立ったもう1つのチューブは天窓からの光を空間に優しく導く。煙突のようになっていてるので上昇気流を作り出す。リビング水平チューブと垂直チューブの交差点にあり、ここからは森を180度見渡すことができる。 ダイニングは水平チューブの西端にある。

 

これらのシンプルな形のアイデアは、L 字型のファサードを背中あわせにして鏡面対称に配置した形に由来している。家の中央にあるバスルームとキッチンの小さな窓だけが、この対称性の破れを示している。 一階の、キッチン、リビングルーム、バスルームのが連続していて、動線がループになっている。部屋を渡り歩いていくと、さまざまな景色が現れ、土地の連続した印象が生まれる。垂直のチューブの中には、2層分の天井高の寝室が収まる。その上には屋上デッキがあり、遠くの山々が眺められるようになっている。
